As the polls to the presidential elections draw nearer, the United Nations Human Rights Commission has taken a significant step to ensure the protection of voters’ civil and political rights. They recently organized a two-day workshop in Buea, bringing together civil society organization (CSO) leaders from the North West and South West Regions with a goal;
To contribute to the promotion and protection of human rights in the context of electoral processes in Cameroon, by strengthening the capacities of local CSOs and jointly developing a practical human rights-based electoral observation guide.

Strengthening Capacities for Election Monitoring
The workshop focused on enhancing the capacities of CSO leaders in election monitoring techniques, reporting violations in electoral contexts, and developing a practical guide on human rights observation. Our coordinator, Mme Raphaela Kianda actively participated in this initiative, alongside other civil society actors. Key areas of discussions included:
- Elections monitoring techniques to ensure transparency and accountability
- Reporting violations in electoral contexts to prevent human rights abuses
- Developing a practical guide on human rights observation for CSOs to engage with during the elections
It was a successful workshop which ended with CSOs being expected to ensure a more equitable and representative electoral process in their communities, effectively monitor and advocate for electoral integrity, collaborate more with other actors for electoral observation and make good use of the practical guide they have developed in electoral observation and advocacy.
