We are working tirelessly to promote peace education and build a culture of peace in schools across the region. Our recent school assessment visits to Our Lady of Fatima Nursery and Primary School Ntaafi, Catholic School Azire, and St. Gabriel Nursery and Primary School, Alamatu, have yielded valuable insights into the impact of peace education on pupils.
Understanding Peace Symbols
During our visit to Our Lady of Fatima Nursery and Primary School Ntaafi, we observed the importance of understanding peace symbols for primary school kids. Peace symbols like the peace sign or dove help children develop values like empathy, respect, and conflict resolution, introducing them to global citizenship and the idea that we are all connected globally.
The Power of Magic Words
At Catholic School Azire, we noticed that teachers have embedded in the pupils the importance of 5 magic words, including “please”, “thank you”, and “sorry”. These words help kids develop essential social skills like respect, empathy, and conflict resolution, creating a culture of kindness and understanding.
Assessing Peace Education
Our assessment visits involve:
- Observing peace education posters
- Testing pupils’ knowledge
- Assessing lesson plans
- Identifying conflicts and challenges
We discuss ways forward with teachers and head teachers to make schools #ViolenceFree, just, and peaceful.
